A simple and easy to make gift

This Valentine's day I wanted to actually make something special rather than resort to buying the standard Valentine's day fare such as candy, flowers, etc. And to actually make something yourself doesn't have to cost a lot of money, and you don't necessarily have to be very creative either. To make this little box you only have to go to your local dollar store. You will need to pick up a pre-made wooden box, paint brushes, acrylic paint (burn umber and black), Hershey Kisses, and craft ribbon.

* Note: Sometimes the boxes sold at the dollar store are a bit rough and will require some sanding. In my case I had to sand the box a bit before it was ready to be stained. I would recommend a very fine sand paper for this job, about 220-grit.

1. First step is to stain the box. Mix 3-4 squirts of burnt umber paint to 1-2 squirts of black paint. Then add in 1-2 tablespoons of water. If the mixture still seems a bit thick add more water until the mixture is somewhat watered down and you can push it around easily in whatever container you chose to hold it in. I went with a canned peanut lid. I found the burn amber and black paint mixture gave the box the nicest colour.

2. If you box is like mine it comes with a hinge. Make sure all the fittings are removed prior to painting. Then using the paint brush, cover the box with the newly made paint mixture. If you're careful you won't need to tape off the glass portion of the lid. Let sit for about one to two minutes then using a paper towel wipe off all the paint on the box. This will reveal the wood grain texture of the box but still leave it stained. You can at this point stop if you wish. However if you want the box to look darker, like mine, do a total of 3 coats applying and wiping off the paint.

3. Let the box dry for a few hours. Once it's dried to the touch fill the box with whatever you want. I went with Hersey kisses. However you can put it love notes, other candies or if you're planning to propose this Valentine's day you can put the ring inside.

4. Finally wrap the ribbon around the box and tie it off with a bow.

5. Present it to the love of your life. :)
